Arenal or El Arenal is one of the most know parts of Mallorca.
The resort town of El Arenal, also known as S'Arenal, is situated along the central south coast of Mallorca, only approximately 15 kilometers east of Palma de Mallorca, making it the ideal holiday destination.
El Arenal was first at the end of the 19th century by sandstone workers coming from the inland city of Llucmajor. In 1914 the first hotel ‘Hotel Terminus’ opened its doors to tourists and the town was still served by a small fishing dock.
About 35 years later, in the 1950s the area stated to blossom as mainly tourists from Germany discovered the beauty of the island and came to spend their holidays here. While over the years the beach promenade was lined by large hotels and has gained a reputation as party zone in Mallorca, authorities have started with on-going improvement plans for Arenal. Arenal still attracts many visitors every year in search of a beach, bar and clubbing style holiday, especially young people from the age of 18-30 (mainly Germans). It is an ideal location if you want to be near the action and there are lots of things to do all day and night.
El Arenal is a busy resort and a great choice for those looking for a long sandy beach to relax and non-stop nightlife. It is a popular holiday destination during the summer months especially with German travelers who love to party on the beach or at night in one of the many discos along the promenade. But just a bit further away in direction of Palma you also find a very nice and more tranquil part of El Arenal.
Holidays in El Arenal revolve around the sandy beach, the so called “Playa de Palma”, which stretches over 6 kilometers along the coastline. The beach features beautiful golden Sand, mostly shallow waters and is backed by a series of beach huts offering facilities such as showers and small kiosks. The boulevard along the beach has just undergone renovations and presents itself in a very modern and trendy atmosphere. You may even walk, cycle or roller skate right into Palma along the coast.
The restaurants in El Arenal offer all kinds of cuisine and cater for everyone’s taste, from fast-food to traditional tapas and more. Many watersport activities are also offered at the beach or along the coast and the large Aquarium is a popular place for families who would like to get a better knowledge of the marine life. The huge shark aquarium offers even diving with sharks. The nearby Aqualand features water slides and many other attractions.
The public bus takes you also right into the heart of Palma or other places along the coast.
Palma is awaly woth a visit as it has many sightseeing atttractions as well as numerous shops and restaurants and a very picturesque harbor.
The market in Arenal is open every thursday offering fresh fruit, vegetables, local specialties as well as clothes and other items.
